Drivers are being warned by police that driving with your pet could land you a fine up to £5000!
Latest research conducted by uSwitch.com has shown that almost 69% of drivers say they travel with their pet in the car, with up to a fifth advising that they were unaware of the law around driving with a pet unsecured by a safety restraint.
By not securing your pet in your vehicle you are in violation of rule 57 of the Highway Code which states;
“When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly."
“A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”
Police can issue motorists an on the spot fine of £100, if the drivers is seen to be distracted while in control of a vehicle. If the driver fails to pay the fine, a court case could see the driver paying up to a maximum of £5000.
Furthermore, insurance companies are also likely to invalidate insurance policies if found driving with a pet without a restraint. Meaning insurance payouts could be stopped if there is an accident.
